ABCC3

ABCC3: A Comprehensive Overview

Description:

ABCC3, also known as the multidrug resistance protein 3 (MRP3), is a membrane protein expressed in various tissues throughout the body, including the liver, kidneys, and blood-brain barrier. It belongs to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) superfamily of proteins and plays a crucial role in the transport of a wide range of substrates, including drugs, toxins, and endogenous molecules.

Associated Diseases:

Dysfunction of ABCC3 has been linked to several diseases, including:

  • Dubin-Johnson Syndrome: A rare liver disorder characterized by the accumulation of a pigment called bilirubin in the liver, resulting in jaundice and other liver problems.
  • Progressive Familial Intrahepatic Cholestasis (PFIC): A group of inherited liver diseases that lead to the accumulation of bile within the liver.
  • Gallbladder Disease: ABCC3 deficiency can impair bile flow, leading to gallbladder stones and other gallbladder-related conditions.
  • Chemotherapy Resistance: ABCC3 can contribute to the resistance of cancer cells to chemotherapy drugs, making treatment less effective.

Did you Know ?

Approximately 1 in 1,000 people worldwide are estimated to have a mutation in the ABCC3 gene, increasing their risk of developing associated diseases.
