AATK

Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune condition that causes hair loss in patches. It affects both men and women and can occur at any age, although it typically develops before the age of 30. The hair loss can be sudden and is often unpredictable, ranging from small, coin-sized patches to complete baldness (alopecia totalis) or loss of all body hair (alopecia universalis). The exact cause of AA is unknown, but it is thought to be related to a malfunction of the immune system, which attacks the hair follicles.

AA has been associated with several other autoimmune diseases, including:

  • Vitiligo: A condition that causes the loss of skin pigment
  • Thyroid disease: A disorder of the thyroid gland
  • Pernicious anemia: A vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Addison's disease: A disorder of the adrenal glands

Approximately 2% of the world's population has AA. This equates to over 140 million people worldwide.
