Description

The SNURF gene, short for Suppressor of Nonsense Mutations in Fus1 Homologue, is an essential gene involved in various biological processes, particularly in the central nervous system. It encodes a protein known as SNURF, which plays a crucial role in RNA splicing, a process that ensures the proper maturation and function of RNA molecules.

SNURF interacts with other proteins to form the Nonsense-Mediated mRNA Decay (NMD) complex, which identifies and degrades messenger RNAs (mRNAs) that contain premature stop codons. These stop codons can potentially lead to the production of truncated and non-functional proteins. By removing these defective mRNAs, the NMD complex maintains the integrity of the proteome and prevents the accumulation of harmful proteins.
