Description
The POLR1A (RNA polymerase I subunit A) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 2.
The POLR1A gene encodes DNA-directed RNA polymerase I subunit RPA1, an enzyme that is essential for the synthesis of ribosomal RNA.
The POLR1A gene encodes a subunit of RNA polymerase I (Pol I), a key enzyme involved in ribosomal RNA (rRNA) synthesis. Pol I is responsible for transcribing the 47S pre-rRNA, which is subsequently processed into the 5.8S, 18S, and 28S rRNAs essential for ribosome function. Pol I transcription is a multi-step process, involving initiation, elongation, and termination. POLR1A, along with other subunits, forms the catalytic core of Pol I, responsible for synthesizing RNA. POLR1A specifically contributes a Mg(2+)-coordinating DxDGD motif, essential for nucleotide addition during RNA synthesis. Pol I also possesses proofreading activity, allowing it to remove misincorporated nucleotides.
