The MESD (mesoderm development LRP chaperone) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 15.
MESD is a gene that encodes the protein mesoderm development LRP chaperone (MESD).
MESD acts as a chaperone for the folding of beta-propeller/EGF modules within the LDLR family. It also modulates the Wnt pathway by chaperoning LRP5 and LRP6 to the plasma membrane. MESD is essential for embryonic polarity and mesoderm induction. It plays a crucial role in neuromuscular junction formation by promoting LRP4 cell-surface expression. Additionally, MESD may regulate phagocytosis of apoptotic retinal pigment epithelium cells.
