Defects in ABCG5 and ABCG8 genes can lead to a rare condition called sitosterolemia, characterized by the accumulation of plant sterols in the body. This can result in a range of health issues, including accelerated atherosclerosis (narrowing of arteries), liver disease, and nervous system disorders.
