GDF7

Description

The GDF7 (growth differentiation factor 7) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 2.

Growth differentiation factor 7 (GDF7) is a protein encoded by the GDF7 gene in humans. It belongs to the transforming growth factor beta superfamily and is specifically found in the roof plate of the developing nervous system. The roof plate is crucial for the development of various spinal cord dorsal interneurons, and GDF7 specifically induces the formation of sensory neurons in the dorsal spinal cord from neural crest cells by signaling within the roof plate.

GDF7 may play an active role in the motor area of the primate neocortex.

GDF7 is also known as BMP12.
