GAR1

Description

The GAR1 (GAR1 ribonucleoprotein) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 4.

GAR1 is essential for ribosome biogenesis and telomere maintenance. It is a component of the H/ACA small nucleolar ribonucleoprotein (snoRNP) complex, which is responsible for pseudouridylation of rRNA. This process involves the isomerization of uridine, where the ribose is attached to C5 instead of the normal N1. Each rRNA can contain up to 100 pseudouridine ('psi') residues, which play a role in stabilizing the conformation of rRNAs. GAR1 may also be involved in the proper processing or intranuclear trafficking of TERC, the RNA component of the telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) holoenzyme.

GAR1 is also known as NOLA1.
