GALNT13

Description

The GALNT13 (polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase 13) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 2.

GALNT13 is an enzyme that in humans is encoded by the GALNT13 gene. It is involved in the biosynthesis of O-linked oligosaccharides.

GALNT13 catalyzes the initial step in O-linked oligosaccharide biosynthesis by transferring an N-acetyl-D-galactosamine (GalNAc) residue from UDP-GalNAc to a serine or threonine residue on a protein receptor. This process generates the GalNAc-O-Ser/Thr structure, also known as the Tn antigen, which is immunogenic and serves as a precursor for various mucin-type O-glycan core structures. GALNT13 contributes to the synthesis of O-linked glycans on mucins and proteoglycans in the central nervous system and may promote neurogenesis through glycosylation and stabilization of PDPN.

GALNT13 is also known as GalNAc-T13, LINC01850.
