Description

The GADD45A (growth arrest and DNA damage inducible alpha) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

GADD45A, a human protein encoded by the GADD45A gene, belongs to a group of genes known as the GADD45 genes. These genes are induced under stressful conditions, including growth arrest and exposure to DNA-damaging agents (mutagens). The expression of GADD45A is triggered by both p53-dependent and -independent mechanisms following DNA damage. The protein responds to environmental stresses by activating the p38/JNK pathway through MTK1/MEKK4 kinase. The fact that GADD45A expression is a marker of DNA damage has led to the development of a mutagenicity test, the GADD45a-GFP GreenScreen HC assay. This assay utilizes a cell line engineered to express green fluorescent protein upon GADD45A activation, allowing for easy detection of DNA damage.
