GABARAPL1

Description

The GABARAPL1 (GABA type A receptor associated protein like 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12.

GABARAPL1 is a ubiquitin-like modifier that increases the cell-surface expression of kappa-type opioid receptors by facilitating their anterograde intracellular trafficking. It is also involved in the formation of autophagosomal vacuoles, a key step in autophagy. While LC3s are important for the elongation of the phagophore membrane, GABARAP/GATE-16 subfamily members play a crucial role in a later stage of autophagosome maturation. GABARAPL1 interacts with the reticulophagy receptor TEX264, contributing to the remodeling of endoplasmic reticulum subdomains into autophagosomes during nutrient stress. These autophagosomes then fuse with lysosomes for endoplasmic reticulum turnover.

GABARAPL1 is also known as APG8-LIKE, APG8L, ATG8, ATG8B, ATG8L, GEC1.
