G6PC2

Description

The G6PC2 (glucose-6-phosphatase catalytic subunit 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 2.

The G6PC2 gene directs the creation of an enzyme belonging to the glucose-6-phosphatase catalytic subunit family. These enzymes form part of a complex membrane system that breaks down glucose-6-phosphate, the final step in the gluconeogenic and glycogenolytic pathways, releasing glucose into the bloodstream. The specific enzyme encoded by this gene resides within pancreatic islets and lacks phosphohydrolase activity. However, it is a significant target for autoimmune responses in diabetes. Several variations of this gene, created by alternative splicing, have been identified, but their biological significance remains unclear.

G6PC2 is also known as IGRP.
