FPGT
Description
The FPGT (fucose-1-phosphate guanylyltransferase) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.
The FPGT gene encodes Fucose-1-phosphate guanylyltransferase, an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of GDP-beta-L-fucose, a key sugar in glycoproteins and other complex carbohydrates. L-fucose plays a crucial role in cell-cell recognition and other functions of these macromolecules. While there are two pathways for GDP-beta-L-fucose biosynthesis, FPGT participates in an alternative pathway found in tissues like liver and kidney. This pathway acts as a salvage mechanism to recycle L-fucose from the breakdown of glycoproteins and glycolipids. This process involves the phosphorylation of L-fucose to form beta-L-fucose-1-phosphate, which is then condensed with GTP by FPGT to generate GDP-beta-L-fucose.
