FOLR3
Description
The FOLR3 (folate receptor gamma) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.
Folate receptor gamma is a protein encoded by the FOLR3 gene in humans. It plays a role in the uptake of folic acid. The FOLR gene family (FOLR1, FOLR2, and FOLR3) is located on chromosome 11q13.3–q14.1. FOLR3 is found in hematopoietic tissues, such as the spleen and bone marrow, and is secreted as a protein. It is present in humans but not in mice or rats. The FOLR3 gene is polymorphic due to a nonsense mutation that creates a truncated protein (FRγ) that can still bind folic acid. Each FOLR3 gene has 5 exons, 4 introns, and 1 promoter, which encodes a single transcript. Expression of FOLR3 is more strongly associated with plasma homocysteine (Hcy) levels than FOLR1 and FOLR2. FOLR3 may lower plasma Hcy compared to other FOLRs. It has been shown that FOLR3 can metabolize both intracellular and extracellular Hcy.
