FOLR2

Description

The FOLR2 (folate receptor beta) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

Folate receptor beta is a protein encoded by the FOLR2 gene in humans. It belongs to the folate receptor (FOLR) family, known for their high affinity for folic acid and various reduced folic acid derivatives. FOLR2 mediates the delivery of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate into cells. It shares 68% and 79% sequence homology with FOLR1 and FOLR3, respectively. While initially thought to be exclusive to the placenta, FOLR2 is also found in the spleen, bone marrow, and thymus.

FOLR2 mediates the delivery of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate and folate analogs into cells by binding to folate and reduced folic acid derivatives. It exhibits high affinity for folate and folic acid analogs at neutral pH. Upon endocytosis, exposure to slightly acidic pH induces a conformational change, decreasing its affinity for folates and facilitating their release. FOLR2 is also known as BETA-HFR, FBP, FBP/PL-1, FOLR1, FR-BETA, FR-P3, FRbeta.
