FLT3 : fms related receptor tyrosine kinase 3

The FLT3 Gene: A Key Player in Blood Cell Development and Leukemia

Description

The FLT3 gene is responsible for creating a protein called fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3). FLT3 is a receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK), a specialized protein that plays a crucial role in cell signaling. It resides on the surface of certain cell types and binds to a protein called FLT3 ligand (FL).

Associated Diseases

FLT3 mutations are commonly found in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a type of blood cancer that affects the development and growth of myeloid cells. These mutations often lead to increased FLT3 signaling, which can contribute to uncontrolled cell proliferation and survival.

Did you Know ?

Approximately 25-30% of AML patients have FLT3 mutations, making it one of the most frequently mutated genes in this disease.
