Hyperparathyroidism
Description:
Hyperparathyroidism is a condition in which the parathyroid glands, located in the neck, produce too much parathyroid hormone (PTH). PTH regulates calcium and phosphorus levels in the body, and an excess of PTH can lead to a number of health problems.
Types of Hyperparathyroidism:
There are two main types of hyperparathyroidism: primary and secondary.
- Primary hyperparathyroidism is caused by a problem with the parathyroid glands themselves, such as a benign tumor or an enlargement of the glands.
- Secondary hyperparathyroidism is caused by another underlying condition, such as kidney disease or vitamin D deficiency, that leads to increased production of PTH.
Associated Diseases:
Hyperparathyroidism has been linked with a number of other diseases, including:
- Osteoporosis
- Kidney stones
- Pancreatitis
- Heart disease
- Certain types of cancer
