FGF19

Description

The FGF19 (fibroblast growth factor 19) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

FGF19 is a hormone encoded by the FGF19 gene. It regulates bile acid synthesis, affecting glucose and lipid metabolism. Lower levels of FGF19 are associated with chronic bile acid diarrhea and certain metabolic disorders. FGF19 is a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. FGFs are involved in various biological processes such as cell growth, development, and tissue repair. FGF19 binds to FGFR4 with high affinity and requires heparin. It is expressed in fetal brain tissue but not in adults. FGF19 works synergistically with Wnt-8c in the development of the inner ear. FGF19 shares similar functions with FGF15, its mouse counterpart. They are often referred to as FGF15/19.
