FCHO2

Description

The FCHO2 (FCH and mu domain containing endocytic adaptor 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 5.

FCH domain only protein 2 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the FCHO2 gene.

FCHO2 plays a critical role in the early stages of clathrin-mediated endocytosis. This protein exhibits both membrane binding and bending capabilities, enabling it to recruit essential proteins for the formation of functional clathrin-coated pits. Notably, FCHO2 exhibits a preference for lipid-rich membranes containing phosphatidylserine and phosphoinositides, particularly Pi(4,5) biphosphate, which are prevalent in the plasma membrane. Its membrane-bending activity is believed to be crucial for the subsequent recruitment of clathrin and adaptors, ultimately leading to the formation of clathrin-coated vesicles. FCHO2 is involved in both adaptor protein complex AP-2-dependent endocytosis of the transferrin receptor and AP-2-independent endocytosis of the LDL receptor.
