FBLN2

Description

The FBLN2 (fibulin 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 3.

Fibulin-2 is a protein encoded by the FBLN2 gene in humans. It is an extracellular matrix protein belonging to the fibulin family. Fibulin-2 binds to various extracellular ligands and calcium, and might play a role in organ development, particularly in the differentiation of heart, skeletal, and neuronal structures. Different isoforms are produced due to alternative splicing. Recently, Fibulin-2 has been identified as a biomarker for meningiomas, a common brain tumor. A blood test can differentiate between grade II meningiomas (poor prognosis) and grade I meningiomas (better prognosis) without the need for surgery. Fibulin-2 interacts with Laminin alpha 1, Laminin alpha 5, and Perlecan.

Fibulin-2's interaction with fibronectin and other ligands requires calcium. It may serve as a bridge connecting FBN1 and ELN.
