FARP1

Description

The FARP1 (FERM, ARH/RhoGEF and pleckstrin domain protein 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 13.

FARP1, encoded by the FARP1 gene, is a protein with a predicted ezrin-like domain, a Dbl homology domain, and a pleckstrin homology domain. It is thought to belong to the band 4.1 superfamily, which connects the cytoskeleton to the cell membrane. It was initially discovered due to its higher expression in differentiated chondrocytes compared to dedifferentiated chondrocytes. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene.

FARP1 acts as a guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) for RAC1, a small GTPase involved in various cellular processes. It may participate in semaphorin signaling pathways. Additionally, it plays a role in the dynamic assembly and disassembly of dendritic filopodia, the formation of dendritic spines, and the regulation of dendrite length, ultimately contributing to synapse formation.

FARP1 is also known as CDEP, FARP1-IT1, GLCC1, PLEKHC2, PPP1R75.
