Epilepsy
Description
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures. Seizures are sudden, excessive electrical discharges in the brain that can cause a variety of symptoms, including:
- Loss of consciousness
- Uncontrollable jerking movements
- Confusion
- Memory loss
- Sensory changes
- Autonomic disturbances (e.g., rapid heartbeat, sweating)
Epilepsy is classified into two main types:
- Focal seizures: Originate in a specific area of the brain
- Generalized seizures: Involve the entire brain
Associated Diseases
Epilepsy can be associated with a variety of other medical conditions, including:
- Stroke
- Head injury
- Brain tumors
- Infections (e.g., meningitis, encephalitis)
- Neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Alzheimer's disease)
