ELFN1

Description

The ELFN1 (extracellular leucine rich repeat and fibronectin type III domain containing 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.

ELFN1 is a postsynaptic protein that plays a crucial role in regulating the activity of neural circuits within the central nervous system. It achieves this by influencing the timing of interneuron activation. Specifically located at excitatory synapses targeting oriens-lacunosum molecular (OLM) interneurons, ELFN1 controls the likelihood of neurotransmitter release from presynaptic neurons, thereby promoting the formation of highly adaptable pyramidal-OLM synapses. This protein also acts as an inhibitor of protein phosphatase 1 (PP1) activity, preventing the dephosphorylation of target proteins.

ELFN1 is also known as PPP1R28.
