ELF5

Description

The ELF5 (E74 like ETS transcription factor 5) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

ELF5 (E74-like factor 5, also known as ESE2), is a gene found in both mice and humans. The protein encoded by this gene belongs to an epithelium-specific subclass of the ETS transcription factor family. ELF5 plays a role in regulating the later stages of keratinocyte terminal differentiation and appears to regulate a number of epithelium-specific genes found in tissues containing glandular epithelium such as salivary gland and prostate. ELF5 has very low affinity to DNA due to its negative regulatory domain at the amino terminus. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described for this gene. ELF5 has been linked to breast or prostate cancer. There are preliminary reports associating a genetic variant near chromosome location 11.13 with severe COVID-19, suggesting a potential role in lung endothelium ELF5 expression and COVID-19 severity.

ELF5 acts as a transcription activator, potentially playing a role in controlling the later stages of keratinocyte terminal differentiation.

ELF5 is also known as ESE2.
