Description

The EIF5AL1 (eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A like 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 10.

EIF5AL1, also known as eIF-5A-1-like or eIF-5A1-like, plays a crucial role in translation by promoting elongation and termination, particularly when ribosomes encounter specific amino acid sequences that cause stalling. It binds between the exit (E) and peptidyl (P) sites of the ribosome and helps rescue stalled ribosomes, particularly those translating polyproline-containing peptides and other stalling motifs. EIF5AL1 also acts as a ribosome quality control (RQC) cofactor, joining the RQC complex to facilitate peptidyl transfer during CAT tailing, a step in the RQC process. Additionally, EIF5AL1 is involved in various cellular processes including actin dynamics, cell cycle progression, mRNA decay, and possibly in pathways related to stress response and cell wall integrity.
