The EIF3H (eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 subunit H) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 8.

EIF3H is a human gene that encodes the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 subunit H (eIF3h). EIF3h interacts with EIF3A.

EIF3H, also known as eIF3h, is a component of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 (eIF-3) complex, which is essential for multiple steps in protein synthesis initiation. The eIF-3 complex binds to the 40S ribosome and helps assemble the 43S pre-initiation complex (PIC) by recruiting other initiation factors (eIF-1, eIF-1A, eIF-2:GTP:methionyl-tRNAi, and eIF-5). The eIF-3 complex then facilitates mRNA recruitment to the 43S PIC and guides the ribosome to locate the AUG start codon. Furthermore, the eIF-3 complex plays a role in recycling ribosomes after translation termination, preventing premature joining of ribosomal subunits. It specifically targets and regulates the translation of a select group of mRNAs involved in cell growth and division, including those controlling cell cycle progression, differentiation, and apoptosis. The eIF-3 complex uses diverse RNA stem-loop binding mechanisms to activate or suppress translation depending on the specific mRNA target.
