Description

The EIF3E (eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 subunit E) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 8.

EIF3E is a subunit of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 (eIF-3) complex, which is essential for several steps in the initiation of protein synthesis. It associates with the 40S ribosome, facilitating the recruitment of other initiation factors to form the 43S pre-initiation complex. EIF3E also plays a role in mRNA recruitment and scanning for the AUG start codon. The eIF-3 complex is involved in the disassembly and recycling of post-termination ribosomal complexes, preventing premature joining of ribosomal subunits. It specifically targets and initiates translation of mRNAs involved in cell proliferation, including cell cycling, differentiation, and apoptosis. EIF3E is also required for nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD), potentially acting with UPF2 to divert mRNAs from translation to the NMD pathway. It may interact with MCM7 and EPAS1, regulating their proteasome-mediated degradation.
