Description
The EIF3C (eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 subunit C) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16.
Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 subunit C (eIF3c) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the EIF3C gene.
EIF3C is a component of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 (eIF-3) complex, which is essential for the initiation of protein synthesis. The eIF-3 complex interacts with the 40S ribosome and recruits other initiation factors, including eIF-1, eIF-1A, eIF-2:GTP:methionyl-tRNAi and eIF-5, to form the 43S pre-initiation complex (43S PIC). This complex facilitates mRNA recruitment and scanning for the AUG start codon. The eIF-3 complex is also involved in the recycling of post-termination ribosomal complexes, preventing premature joining of ribosomal subunits. It specifically targets and initiates translation of mRNAs involved in cell proliferation, including those regulating cell cycling, differentiation, and apoptosis. The eIF-3 complex utilizes different RNA stem-loop binding mechanisms to either activate or repress translation.
