DUOX1

Description

The DUOX1 (dual oxidase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 15.

DUOX1, also known as DUOX1 or ThOX1 (for thyroid oxidase), is an enzyme encoded by the DUOX1 gene. It was first identified in the mammalian thyroid gland. Two isoforms of DUOX1 exist in humans: hDUOX1 and hDUOX2. While DUOX1 is found in various tissues, hDUOX1 is prominent in airway epithelial cells, while hDUOX2 is found primarily in salivary glands and the gastrointestinal tract. DUOX1 belongs to the NOX/DUOX family of NADPH oxidases, which are involved in regulated production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in non-phagocytic cells. Other members of this family have been linked to diverse biological roles, including hypertension, innate immunity, otoconia formation, and thyroid hormone biosynthesis.

DUOX1 is also known as LNOX1, NOXEF1, THOX1.
