Description
Dyskeratosis congenita (DC) is a rare genetic disorder that affects the skin, nails, mucous membranes, and bone marrow. It is characterized by the triad of abnormal skin pigmentation, nail dystrophy, and oral leukoplakia. DC can also lead to bone marrow failure, pulmonary fibrosis, and liver cirrhosis.
Associated Diseases
DC is associated with a number of other diseases, including:
- Aplastic anemia - A condition in which the bone marrow does not produce enough blood cells.
- Myelodysplastic syndrome - A condition in which the bone marrow produces abnormal blood cells.
- Acute myeloid leukemia - A cancer of the blood and bone marrow.
- Pulmonary fibrosis - A condition in which the lungs become scarred and thickened.
- Liver cirrhosis - A condition in which the liver becomes scarred and damaged.
