DSCAML1

Description

The DSCAML1 (DS cell adhesion molecule like 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

Down syndrome cell adhesion molecule like 1 is a protein in humans that is encoded by the DSCAML1 gene.

DSCAML1 acts as a cell adhesion molecule, promoting neuronal self-avoidance by repelling specific neuronal processes of either the same cell or similar cell types. It contributes to the organized growth of neurites in retinal rod bipolar cells (isoneuronal self-avoidance) and the proper spacing of AII amacrine cells (heteroneuronal self-avoidance). Furthermore, DSCAML1 facilitates the formation of lamina-specific synaptic connections in the retina. It is expressed in specific subsets of interneurons and retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and promotes synaptic connectivity through homophilic interactions.

DSCAML1 is also known as DSCAM2.
