Description

The DHRS7 (dehydrogenase/reductase 7) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 14.

DHRS7, a human protein encoded by the DHRS7 gene, belongs to the short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR) family. These enzymes catalyze oxidation/reduction reactions involving various substrates, including retinoids and steroids.

DHRS7 is a NADPH-dependent oxidoreductase that catalyzes the reduction of various compounds containing carbonyl groups, including steroids, retinoids, and xenobiotics. It plays a role in the inactivation of 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone to 3alpha-androstanediol, potentially modulating androgen receptor function. It also contributes to the reduction of all-trans-retinal to all-trans-retinol. While DHRS7 can convert cortisone to 20beta-dihydrocortisone in vitro, the physiological significance of this activity is uncertain. Additionally, it reduces exogenous compounds like quinones and other xenobiotics in vitro, suggesting involvement in xenobiotic biotransformation. Notably, dehydrogenase activity has not been observed in DHRS7. There is evidence to suggest that DHRS7 might act as a tumor suppressor.
