Description
The LTBP1 (latent transforming growth factor beta binding protein 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 2.
LTBP1 is a member of the latent TGF-beta binding proteins (LTBP) family, which are secreted multidomain proteins that were originally identified by their association with the latent form of transforming growth factors. LTBP1 interacts with a variety of extracellular matrix proteins and may play a role in the regulation of TGF beta bioavailability.
LTBP1 is a key regulator of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-Ξ²1, TGF-Ξ²2 and TGF-Ξ²3) that controls TGF-Ξ² activation by maintaining it in a latent state during storage in extracellular space. LTBP1 specifically associates with the Latency-associated peptide (LAP), the regulatory chain of TGF-Ξ², via disulfide bonds, and regulates integrin-dependent activation of TGF-Ξ². However, LTBP1 can be outcompeted by LRRC32/GARP for binding to the LAP regulatory chain of TGF-Ξ².
