DAO

Description

The DAO (D-amino acid oxidase) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12.

DAO, Dão or DAO may refer to:

DAO regulates the levels of the neuromodulator D-serine in the brain, contributing to dopamine synthesis through its activity on D-DOPA. It removes accumulated D-amino acids, potentially acting as a detoxifying agent during aging. DAO exhibits broad substrate specificity, favoring D-amino acids with small hydrophobic side chains and exhibiting weaker activity towards polar, aromatic, and basic groups. However, it does not act on acidic amino acids.

DAO is also known as DAAO, DAMOX, OXDA.
