CST2

Description

The CST2 (cystatin SA) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 20.

The CST2 gene encodes a protein called Cystatin-SA. Cystatin-SA belongs to the cystatin superfamily, which includes proteins that contain multiple cystatin-like sequences. Some of these proteins are active cysteine protease inhibitors, while others have lost or never acquired this inhibitory activity. Cystatin-SA is a type 2 cystatin, a class of cysteine proteinase inhibitors found in various human fluids and secretions, where they provide protective functions. The CST2 gene is located in the cystatin locus on chromosome 20, along with other type 2 cystatin genes and pseudogenes. This gene encodes a secreted thiol protease inhibitor found at high levels in saliva, tears, and seminal plasma.
