CRABP1

Description

The CRABP1 (cellular retinoic acid binding protein 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 15.

CRABP1, encoded by the CRABP1 gene, is a protein involved in retinoic acid-mediated differentiation and proliferation processes. While structurally similar to cellular retinol-binding proteins, it binds specifically to retinoic acid. CRABP1 is constitutively expressed and has distinct functions compared to its related protein, CRABP2.

CRABP1 binds to retinoic acid and facilitates its transport into the nucleus. This retinoic acid molecule is then released and binds to the retinoic acid receptor (RAR) and the retinoid X receptor (RXR), forming homodimers or heterodimers. This complex further binds to retinoic acid response elements (RARE) on DNA, regulating the transcription of retinoid acid-dependent genes. The domains for nuclear localization and retinoic acid binding are distinct. CRABP1 has been implicated in several cancer proliferation pathways.

CRABP1 is also known as CRABP, CRABP-I, CRABPI, RBP5.
