COX7A1

Description

The COX7A1 (cytochrome c oxidase subunit 7A1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

COX7A1 is a gene that encodes Cytochrome c oxidase polypeptide 7A1, a mitochondrial enzyme. This enzyme is part of cytochrome c oxidase (COX), the final component in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. COX catalyzes the transfer of electrons from reduced cytochrome c to oxygen, creating a proton gradient across the mitochondrial membrane. This gradient drives ATP synthesis, the main energy source for cells. The COX complex consists of 3 catalytic subunits encoded by mitochondrial genes and multiple structural subunits encoded by nuclear genes. COX7A1 encodes polypeptide 1 of subunit VIIa, which is only present in muscle tissues. Other polypeptides of subunit VIIa are found in both muscle and non-muscle tissues and are encoded by different genes.

COX7A1 is a subunit of cytochrome c oxidase (COX), the final enzyme in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. COX is responsible for the transfer of electrons from reduced cytochrome c to molecular oxygen, generating a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane. This gradient powers the ATP synthase, which produces ATP, the primary energy currency of cells. COX7A1, specifically, plays a role in the assembly and regulation of the COX complex.

COX7A1 is also known as COX7A, COX7AH, COX7AM.
