Description

The COLEC12 (collectin subfamily member 12) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 18.

Collectin-12, also known as collectin subfamily member 12, is a collectin protein encoded by the COLEC12 gene in humans. This protein belongs to the collectin family, characterized by collagen-like sequences and carbohydrate recognition domains. As a scavenger receptor, Collectin-12 plays a key role in host defense by binding to carbohydrate antigens on microorganisms, facilitating their recognition and removal. It also mediates the recognition, internalization, and degradation of oxidatively modified low density lipoprotein by vascular endothelial cells.

Collectin-12, also known as Collectin placenta protein 1, Nurse cell scavenger receptor 2, Scavenger receptor class A member 4, Scavenger receptor with C-type lectin, is a scavenger receptor that plays a crucial role in host defense. It facilitates the binding and phagocytosis of various pathogens, including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as yeast. Additionally, it mediates the recognition, internalization, and degradation of oxidatively modified low density lipoprotein (oxLDL) by vascular endothelial cells. This receptor exhibits a calcium-dependent binding affinity for diverse carbohydrates, including Gal-type ligands, D-galactose, L- and D-fucose, GalNAc, T and Tn antigens. It selectively internalizes GalNAc in nurse-like cells. Furthermore, Collectin-12 binds to sialyl Lewis X, a trisaccharide, and asialo-orosomucoid (ASOR). Notably, it may contribute to the clearance of amyloid-beta, a key factor in Alzheimer's disease.
