COL4A2
Description
The COL4A2 (collagen type IV alpha 2 chain) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 13.
COL4A2 encodes the alpha-2(IV) chain, one of six subunits of type IV collagen, the primary building block of basement membranes. The C-terminal portion of the protein, known as canstatin, inhibits angiogenesis and tumor growth. Like other type IV collagen genes, COL4A2 shares a common promoter with another type IV collagen gene, arranged in a head-to-head configuration.
COL4A2 encodes a protein that is a major component of glomerular basement membranes (GBM). This protein forms a 'chicken-wire' meshwork together with other proteins like laminins, proteoglycans and entactin/nidogen.
