COL23A1

Description

The COL23A1 (collagen type XXIII alpha 1 chain) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 5.

The COL23A1 gene encodes for collagen alpha-1(XXIII) chain, a protein found on chromosome 5q35 in humans. This protein is a type II transmembrane collagen, meaning it spans the cell membrane. Collagen XXIII is part of a family of non-fibrillar collagens, which have a single hydrophobic transmembrane domain. It exists in two forms: membrane-bound and shed. Collagen XXIII is found in various tissues, including the epidermis, tongue, gut, lung, brain, kidney, and cornea. Its expression in prostate cancer is linked to tumor progression. The exact functions of collagen XXIII are not yet fully understood, but it is thought to have similar roles to other transmembrane collagens like collagen XIII. It was first identified and isolated from rat prostate carcinoma cells by Jacqueline Banyard, Lere Bao, and Bruce R. Zetter in 2003.
