COL15A1

Description

The COL15A1 (collagen type XV alpha 1 chain) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 9.

Collagen alpha-1(XV) chain is a protein encoded by the COL15A1 gene in humans. It belongs to the FACIT collagen family and is primarily found in basement membranes. This protein helps attach basement membranes to underlying connective tissues. Studies in mice have shown that a lack of collagen XV leads to muscle and microvessel deterioration. Collagen XV acts as a tumor suppressor, providing support to cell membranes and helping to anchor cells. Its absence can lead to cancer-like behavior, as tumor cells can invade the basement membrane without this structural support, potentially leading to metastasis. However, excessive expression of collagen XV is found in cervical cancer. The absence of collagen XV can indicate an invasive tumor, suggesting potential future medical applications.
