Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Description:
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive lung disease characterized by airflow limitation that worsens over time. It is caused by prolonged exposure to harmful particles or gases, typically from cigarette smoke or air pollution. COPD makes it difficult to breathe, leading to shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, and mucus production.
Associated Diseases:
COPD is often associated with other respiratory conditions, including:
- Emphysema: Damage to the alveoli (air sacs) in the lungs, leading to loss of lung function.
- Chronic bronchitis: Inflammation and thickening of the bronchial tubes, causing excessive mucus production.
- Asthma: A chronic inflammatory condition that narrows the airways and causes wheezing and difficulty breathing.
