CMTR2

Description

The CMTR2 (cap methyltransferase 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16.

CMTR2 is an S-adenosyl-L-methionine-dependent methyltransferase that adds a methyl group to the 2'-O position of the ribose sugar on the second nucleotide of a capped mRNA. This process, known as cap2 methylation, converts cap0 (m(7)GpppG) to cap2 (m(7)GpppRmpNm). CMTR2 recognizes the guanosine cap on RNA regardless of its N(7) methylation status and can methylate both cap0 and cap1 structures. However, it shows a preference for cap1 RNAs.

CMTR2 is also known as AFT, FTSJD1, HMTr2, MTr2.
