CMTR1

Description

The CMTR1 (cap methyltransferase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.

CMTR1 is an S-adenosyl-L-methionine-dependent methyltransferase that adds a methyl group to the ribose sugar of the first nucleotide in a 5'-cap structure of mRNAs and small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs). This methylation produces a m(7)GpppRm (cap1) structure, which is associated with increased translation rates. CMTR1 preferentially modifies cap0 transcripts, suggesting a role in regulating translation initiation. The protein is also implicated in the interferon response pathway. Evidence for these functions comes from studies published in PubMed IDs 18533109, 20713356, and 21310715.

CMTR1 is also known as FTSJD2, KIAA0082, MTr1, hMTr1.
