CLCN6
Description
The CLCN6 (chloride voltage-gated channel 6) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.
The CLCN6 gene encodes Chloride transport protein 6, a protein involved in chloride transport. It belongs to the CLCN family of voltage-dependent chloride channel genes, which includes nine members (CLCN1-7, Ka and Kb) with diverse functions but shared sequence homology. Chloride channel 6 and 7 form a subbranch of this family. CLCN6 has four alternatively spliced transcript variants. The gene is located near two other kidney-specific chloride channel genes, CLCNKA and CLCNKB.
CLCN6 is a voltage-gated channel that facilitates the exchange of chloride ions against protons, acting as an antiporter. This process contributes to the acidification of the late endosome lumen. CLCN6 belongs to the CLC channel family, which includes both chloride channels and proton-coupled anion transporters responsible for exchanging chloride or other anions for protons. A defining characteristic of antiporter members within this family is the presence of conserved gating glutamate residues.
