Description
The CHST7 (carbohydrate sulfotransferase 7) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome X.
The CHST7 gene encodes Carbohydrate sulfotransferase 7, an enzyme involved in chondroitin sulfate biosynthesis. This gene belongs to the sulfotransferase family, which generates sulfated glycosaminoglycan (GAG) moieties. CHST7 transfers sulfate specifically to N-acetylgalactosamine, contributing to the structural diversity of chondroitin sulfates. This regulated expression of CHST7, along with other members of its gene family, plays a significant role in determining the expression of sulfated GAGs and the associated functions of chondroitin sulfates as regulators in various biological processes. The gene is located on chromosome Xp11.23.
CHST7 acts as a sulfotransferase, utilizing 3'-phospho-5'-adenylyl sulfate (PAPS) to transfer sulfate to the 6th position of non-reducing N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) residues. It shows a preference for mannose-linked GlcNAc. Additionally, CHST7 can transfer sulfate to the 6th position of the N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) residue within chondroitin. While it also acts on core 2 mucin-type oligosaccharides and N-acetyllactosamine oligomers, its efficiency is lower in these cases. CHST7 demonstrates minimal or no activity towards keratan sulfate or oligosaccharides containing Galbeta1-4GlcNAc. It catalyzes 6-O-sulfation of beta-benzyl GlcNAc but not alpha- or beta-benzyl GalNAc.
