CHMP2A

Description

The CHMP2A (charged multivesicular body protein 2A) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

CHMP2A is a protein that in humans is encoded by the CHMP2A gene. It is a reference gene.

CHMP2A is a core component of the ESCRT-III complex, which is involved in the formation of multivesicular bodies (MVBs) and the sorting of endosomal cargo proteins into these bodies. MVBs contain intraluminal vesicles (ILVs) that bud from the endosome membrane and are delivered to lysosomes for degradation. This process requires the sequential function of four ESCRT complexes: ESCRT-0, -I, -II, and -III. ESCRT-III proteins detach from the invaginating membrane before the ILV is released. The ESCRT machinery also participates in other membrane fission events, including the final stages of cytokinesis, nuclear envelope sealing, and mitotic spindle disassembly.

CHMP2A is also known as BC-2, BC2, CHMP2, VPS2, VPS2A.
