CHMP1B is a key component of the ESCRT-III complex, which plays a crucial role in the formation of multivesicular bodies (MVBs). MVBs are essential for the degradation of cellular components through their delivery to lysosomes. CHMP1B contributes to the invagination and scission of the endosomal membrane, leading to the formation of intraluminal vesicles (ILVs) within MVBs. This process is critical for sorting and degrading various proteins, including growth factor receptors, lysosomal enzymes, and lipids. The ESCRT-III complex also participates in other membrane fission events, such as cytokinesis (cell division) and the release of enveloped viruses like HIV-1.
