Description

The CHL1 (cell adhesion molecule L1 like) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 3.

CHL1, short for Close homolog of L1, is a protein encoded by the CHL1 gene in humans. It is a cell adhesion molecule closely related to L1. CHL1's expression in melanocytic cells can be regulated by MITF, and it can function as a helicase protein during the interphase stage of mitosis. CHL1 exhibits dynamic localization, indicating its diverse roles within the cell and various locations.

CHL1 is a crucial protein involved in nervous system development and synaptic plasticity. Both its soluble and membrane-bound forms promote neurite outgrowth in cerebellar and hippocampal neurons, while also preventing neuronal cell death. It plays a vital role in positioning pyramidal neurons, regulating the number of interneurons, and influencing the effectiveness of GABAergic synapses. Additionally, CHL1 might be involved in cell migration during nerve regeneration and cortical development. It enhances integrin-dependent cell migration towards extracellular matrix proteins and helps recruit ANK3 to the plasma membrane.

CHL1 is also known as CALL, L1CAM2.
