Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD): An Overview
Description:
Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a rare inherited disorder that impairs the body's ability to fight certain infections, particularly those caused by bacteria and fungi. It occurs due to defects in phagocyte function, specifically in the NADPH oxidase complex, which generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) essential for killing microbes.
Associated Diseases:
CGD can be linked to various diseases, including:
- Chronic infections: recurrent infections of the lungs, skin, lymph nodes, liver, and bones
- Granulomatous inflammation: formation of chronic inflammatory lesions called granulomas in affected organs
- Autoimmune disorders: such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease
- Developmental abnormalities: in severe cases, may cause growth delay, intellectual disability, and facial dysmorphism
Did you Know ?
- The estimated incidence of CGD worldwide is 1 in 200,000 live births. However, it is more common in certain populations, such as Iranian Jews and Bedouin tribes.
